- The first specification for SQL (originally SEQUEL) is published by IBM in 1974.
- 1977
- IBM released System R.
- 1979
- Oracle (originally Relational Software) released Oracle V2 for DEC's VAX.
- 1981
- IBM released SQL/DS for its mainframes.
- 1985
- Informix released INFORMIX-SQL for UNIX.
- 1987
- Sybase released Sybase SQL Server for UNIX.
- 1988
- Sybase, Ashton-Tate and Microsoft partnered to develop SQL Server for OS/2.
- 1993
- Microsoft began development of Microsoft SQL Server independently of Sybase.
- 1994
- 1996
- MySQL AB in Sweden released free and open source MySQL.
- 2001
- IBM acquires the rights to Informix's brand, SQL code and customers.
