  1. 1974
    • The first specification for SQL (originally SEQUEL) is published by IBM in 1974.
  2. 1977
  3. 1979
    • Oracle (originally Relational Software) released Oracle V2 for DEC's VAX.
  4. 1981
    • IBM released SQL/DS for its mainframes.
  5. 1985
  6. 1987
  7. 1988
    • Sybase, Ashton-Tate and Microsoft partnered to develop SQL Server for OS/2.
  8. 1993
  9. 1994
    • Hughes Technologies in Australia released free and open source Mini SQL.
    • The University of California at Berkeley released a version of Postgres with a SQL interpreter, also free and open source.
  10. 1996
    • MySQL AB in Sweden released free and open source MySQL.
  11. 2001
    • IBM acquires the rights to Informix's brand, SQL code and customers.
