KVMs

Updated on August 24, 2007

While it is possible to perform most server maintenance remotely over a network, there will be times when a server can't respond to network requests and it will be necessary to use a locally attached console.

If you maintain several servers, it may be difficult to accomodate a console for each server. Many admins prefer to run headless servers and use a KVM in lieu of unique consoles.

KVM stands for Keyboard, Video and Mouse and refers to a device that allows one console to switch between several PCs. They're very useful when dealing with rackmounted servers.
