Networks

Updated on August 24, 2007

In the early days of client/server networks, the network was the slowest component of the system. Even slow hard drives could flood the industry standard 10 Mbit/sec ethernet networks. Nowadays, the situation is reversed. Most servers connect to networks via a Fast Ethernet (100 Mbit/sec) or Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbit/sec) interface. If your server will be accessed primarily over a LAN, then you should opt for a server with a Gigabit Ethernet interface and connect it to an Ethernet switch which can handle gigabit speeds. If your server will be accessed primarily over the Internet, then a Fast Ethernet interface should suffice since your WAN connection probably won't be any faster.
