CERN httpd
The CERN httpd, sometimes called the WWWDaemon, was the world's first Web server software.
It was developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 while employed at the CERN lab in Switzerland on a NeXT workstation running NeXTSTEP (the precursor to Apple's Mac OS X).
Berners-Lee developed the first Web server in order to allow the various scientists at CERN to easily distribute and share their papers on the Internet, but he allowed anyone to download the code and run their own web server.
The CERN httpd was eclipsed by the NCSA httpd in 1993 but continued to be developed until 1996 when the W3C stopped maintaining the old CERN software and began developing the Java-based Jigsaw Web server.
