Types of Web Hosting Services

Shared

Shared web hosting, where multiple websites are hosted on a single server, is the cheapest and most popular choice for hosting. With a shared server, the provider handles all of the basic systems management.

Disadvantages include the following:

Virtual

Customers of virtual private servers (VPS) share the same physical server, but customers get their own virtual server running its own operating system. This addresses some of the drawbacks of shared hosting. Namely, since customers have their own virtual servers, then can install whatever applications they want. Also, customers don't have OS level access to each others' data.

Dedicated

Dedicated servers are the most popular choice for high-end websites. The customer can dictate the type of server, components, OS and software.

A dedicated server can be managed or unmanaged. With a managed server, the provider is responsible for maintaining the server and performing tasks such as backups and software updates. The provider may restrict the customer from certain operations. With an unmanaged server, the provider will supply the customer with a physical server, an OS and a network connection while the customer would be responsible for all other aspects of systems management. In that case, the provider should offer the use of a remote KVM

Colocated

A cheaper alternative to a dedicated server is a colocation service. In this case, the customer supplies the physical server and the provider offers space in his facility, power and a network connection. The provider typically offers minimal support, but it may be a more secure solution.
